Outpatient Alcohol Rehab

People suffering from alcohol addiction often are still gainfully employed or are living productive lives when they decide to seek treatment. Therefore, outpatient rehab may be the best option for them. Sometimes taking time off from a job is just not possible. Other responsibilities may also sometimes make it challenging to enter an inpatient program.

There are different types of outpatient rehab centers. Some are hospital-based. Others are associated with community organizations. There are also private facilities that give addicts several options. For working individuals, flexible programs offered in private facilities may be the best option.

Community-based outpatient rehab programs can be just as effective. Such programs rely on skilled and trained counselors just like other programs.

They may also offer individual treatment such as medication and individual counseling, along with weekly or even daily group sessions.

An advantage of community-based programs is that they often cost very little and can still offer the needed emotional support. Individuals may need to alter their schedules to attend weekly group sessions or individual counseling sessions.

However, some programs offer evening appointments and groups so the individual can still go to work every day.

If an individual is able to get along with people of all ages, a community program may be a good choice. Hospital-based addiction programs sometimes offer partial programs where individuals check in for a portion of each day, attend group and individual sessions, and are medically monitored by clinical staff. A benefit is that those with special health issues or medical challenges will be monitored closely and will be treated for medical problems at the same time.

Hospital-based programs have access to the latest research and treatment options, such as combining medication with behavioral therapy or possibly biofeedback. They still allow individuals to support each other in group sessions, but may offer more individualized treatment options based on need and medical history or background.

A private outpatient rehab program is often the choice for those who want customized treatment options and who have special needs or need a very flexible program. Often private programs will also accept insurance coverage for treatment. They may also customize programs to work around employment and family activities. An individual may attend evening sessions during the week but may have the option of day sessions or groups on weekends.

There is little research to indicate whether outpatient rehab programs are more or less successful than inpatient programs. It depends on the individual, the severity of the addiction, and many other extenuating circumstances. Those who believe they can take what they learn in counseling and group sessions and apply it in their daily lives can do very well in outpatient rehab programs.

The main considerations in finding the right outpatient program is to find one that is highly recommended. Another consideration should be the professionalism and training of staff who provide counseling, guidance, and medical monitoring. It is always best to ask if you are unsure about a program’s suitability for yourself or a loved one needing alcohol abuse treatment.

Though treatment is important the recovery phase is also critical. Any program that offers outpatient rehab services should provide some follow up services that offer ongoing support for a recovering alcoholic. Continued support is important in maintaining sobriety for most alcoholics.

Some programs will offer support groups and education for family of an addict. This is always a good idea as spouses and family are closest to the recovering alcoholic and must learn how to deal with the various issues that may come up. Family and loved ones can learn how to establish limits for behavior and can learn how to offer the right emotional support.

An outpatient rehab program may be right for the alcoholic who does not need extensive medical treatment or intervention. It offers flexibility for those who absolutely cannot take time away from work or other responsibilities. It is suitable for treating groups of teens or adults in age-appropriate groups where individuals interact and share their successes and failures with peers.

There is no single outpatient rehab program suitable for everyone. Community-based programs are suitable for those who are not working, have more flexible schedules, have limited financial resources, or those who have few or no underlying health problems. Hospital based or private programs are suitable for those who require more medical monitoring and may need medication or extensive counseling to overcome their addictions, by also addressing any long standing emotional difficulties.
